Bomb threat made against St Mary's Catholic Church priest Father Ken HowellFont

A Catholic priest due to take over a Brisbane parish from a sacked rebel clergyman on Sunday has stayed away from the church on police advice.
The decision for Fr Ken Howell not to attend St Mary's Catholic Church in South Brisbane follows revelations on Saturday that the Archbishop of Brisbane, John Bathersby, had been the target of a bomb threat following the sacking of Fr Peter Kennedy for breaching church rules.
A police spokesman confirmed a bomb threat had been made and investigations were continuing.
Fr Ken Howell, who was appointed administrator of St Mary's last week, met with Queensland Police on Saturday and they recommended that he not attend masses at St Mary's this weekend, on the grounds that there may be a risk to those who attend.
"I don't believe that anyone would attend this weekend's services with the intention of behaving violently," Fr Howell said.
"However, tensions are high, people are upset, and Fr Kennedy has urged as many people as possible to attend the service in a spirit of protest.
"I have very reluctantly taken the difficult decision not to preside at, or attend, any of the masses at St Mary's this weekend."
Up to 1000 people were at St Mary's on Sunday to support Fr Kennedy, who is refusing to stand down or hand over the keys to the parish.
"I wonder really whether that happened, he has been advised to not come because of the bomb threat," Fr Kennedy said.
"They fear there might be a confrontation, but I know my people. There won't be a confrontation."
He said today would be a normal mass and he would not stand down.
"The archbishop has to mediate with the community," he said.
"We have been unfairly targeted by the vigilantes."
Herr Doktor Wanderer,
